Thinking about moving to Taipei

Will you be lonely in Taipei?

It is the question under all the other questions, and no city guide answers it. You can check the rent, the internet speed and the visa rules in one afternoon. You cannot check if anyone will talk to you.

A year ago we hadn't met. Now we're best friends.

The short answer

You won't be. We're already here.

Every Friday and Saturday we bring nomads, travelers and locals together in the same bar. A host meets you at the door, learns your name, and introduces you to people. You do not have to stand on your own and hope someone starts a conversation.

Then we go out. On Friday, at about 10pm, the whole group walks to Maji Square together. It is busy every week and easy to find. The hard part is walking in alone.

The rest of the week

You don't have to wait until Friday.

We have a WhatsApp community with separate groups — one for nomads and remote workers, and others where you will meet locals who live here. We post every event there first: what is happening this week, who is coming, and photos and videos from the last one.

People also make their own plans there. A café to work from tomorrow. A hike on Sunday. Dinner tonight. You do not need us to set it up. You already have the group.

The community on a normal week

It is free to join and you do not have to say anything at first. Many people read the group for weeks before they come to an event. You can also follow us on Instagram at @taipei_weekend_social.

The link takes you to the main community. The nomad group and the other groups are inside it.

Common questions

Questions people ask us.

Is Taipei lonely for digital nomads?

You can be, until you find the international community. Taipei does not put it in front of you the way Chiang Mai or Bali does, so it is easy to miss. It is here, and it meets every week. We have run events every Friday and Saturday for two years, with more than 1,500 guests.

Do I need to speak Mandarin?

No. Our events run in English and Mandarin at the same time, and many regulars speak no Mandarin at all. Mandarin helps with daily life, but you do not need it to make friends here.

What is Taipei nightlife like for foreigners?

Better than most people expect. This is the thing visitors underestimate most about Taipei. Maji Square on a Friday is full of people and easy to find. The hard part is going there alone, so we walk over as a group at about 10pm.

I haven't arrived yet. Can I join the community now?

Yes. You can join the WhatsApp community at any time, even before you book a flight. You will see the weekly events and photos right away, so you know what to expect when you arrive.

What is in the WhatsApp community?

Separate groups instead of one large chat: one for nomads and remote workers, and others where you will meet locals. We announce every event there first, with photos and videos from the last one. Between events, people arrange their own café work sessions, hikes and dinners. Reading without posting is normal.

How much does an event cost?

NT$350 at the door, and that includes one drink. Booking ahead is free. You can see the venues, times and photos on meetintaipei.com.
